Lithium–silver vanadium oxide cell
The primary cell inside most implantable cardioverter-defibrillators: a lithium anode against silver vanadium oxide, Ag₂V₄O₁₁, in a liquid electrolyte. It idles for years at microamperes, then delivers pulses of one to three amperes for seconds to charge the shock capacitor, and its sloping discharge curve lets the device predict replacement. Newer designs blend in CFx for energy.
- Abbreviation
- Li/SVO
- Also called
- SVO, silver vanadium oxide, defibrillator battery, ICD battery
Example
Other and emerging chemistries: an example situation
Two chemistries can meet the same energy target with different voltage windows and charge termination.
Read Lithium–silver vanadium oxide cell alongside Lithium–carbon monofluoride cell in this context. A primary cell whose positive electrode is fluorinated carbon, CFx. Its theoretical specific energy, about 2,180 Wh/kg, is the highest of the commercial primary chemistries, and self-discharge is very low; under load it delivers around 2.5–2.8 V. It powers medical implants, military and space equipment and long-life sensors, but heats noticeably at high rates.
