IEC 60601-1

The general safety standard for medical electrical equipment, adopted in the US as ANSI/AAMI ES60601-1. It treats the battery as part of the device: clause 15.4.3 covers battery housings and venting, connection, protection against overcharge and excessive current, and requires lithium batteries to meet IEC 62133 or, for primaries, IEC 60086-4.

Example

Stationary, industrial and product standards: an example situation

A cell-level test does not establish fire performance or commissioning requirements for a complete installation.

Read IEC 60601-1 alongside IEC 60086 in this context. The IEC series for primary batteries. Part 1 sets the electrochemical system letters, designations and test conditions; part 2, split in 2026 into parts 2-1 and 2-2, the dimensions and performance of each standard size; part 3 watch batteries; part 4 the safety of lithium primaries; part 5 the safety of aqueous ones. Medical and equipment standards cite part 4.
