Venting

The controlled release of gas and vapour from a cell whose internal pressure has risen too far, through a vent designed to open before the case bursts. The vented gas is flammable and toxic, so packs route it away from occupants.

Example

Safety and abuse: an example situation

A low normal-load temperature does not demonstrate thermal-runaway containment.

Read Venting alongside Gas generation in this context. Formation of gases — ethylene, hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide — by electrolyte decomposition, mostly during formation and later under high voltage or temperature. In a pouch cell it shows as swelling; in a can it raises pressure until the vent opens.
