Polymer electrolyte

A dry polymer, classically polyethylene oxide with a dissolved lithium salt, that conducts ions through segmental motion of its chains. It is flexible and easy to process but needs 60–80 °C to reach useful conductivity, which has limited it to heated packs.

Example

Electrolytes and separators: an example situation

Greater liquid uptake may improve wetting while changing mechanical behavior. Several properties define separator performance.

Read Polymer electrolyte alongside Gel polymer electrolyte in this context. A polymer matrix swollen with liquid electrolyte, so the cell behaves like a liquid cell but does not leak. It is what most “lithium polymer” pouch cells actually contain, and what “semi-solid” cells use.
