IEC 60086-5

Part 5 of the IEC primary-battery series: safety tests and requirements for non-rechargeable batteries with aqueous electrolyte, such as alkaline, zinc–carbon and zinc–air, covering both intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse. Lithium primary batteries are covered separately, in part 4.

Example

Stationary, industrial and product standards: an example situation

A cell-level test does not establish fire performance or commissioning requirements for a complete installation.

Read IEC 60086-5 alongside Alkaline cell in this context. The common 1.5 V single-use cell, with a zinc negative electrode and manganese dioxide positive in potassium hydroxide electrolyte. It is the reference point for most people’s idea of a battery, and is not rechargeable.
