Section IA, IB and II
The tiers within the air packing instructions for lithium batteries. Section IA is fully regulated; Section IB covers small batteries — cells up to 20 Wh and batteries up to 100 Wh, or 1 g and 2 g of lithium metal — shipped alone; Section II relaxes the rules for such batteries packed with or inside equipment. Section II for batteries shipped alone was withdrawn in 2022.

Example
Vehicle and transport standards: an example situation
Shipping tests and vehicle battery approval tests address different uses; passing one does not automatically satisfy another.
Read Section IA, IB and II alongside Dangerous goods training in this context. The certified training that anyone who classifies, packs, marks or documents dangerous goods must hold for the modes they ship by. Air rules under the ICAO Technical Instructions and IATA require recurrent training within 24 months; US 49 CFR requires it at least every three years. Shipping lithium batteries under Section IB, or fully regulated, needs it.
