Voltage fade

A gradual drop in a cell’s average discharge voltage as it cycles, distinct from capacity fade. It is a known weakness of the lithium-rich manganese cathode, whose structure migrates towards spinel-like phases, costing a few tenths of a volt over a few hundred cycles. Energy then falls even where ampere-hours hold, so it must be tracked in watt-hours.

Example

Aging and degradation: an example situation

Capacity loss and resistance rise can have different causes; a film-growth curve cannot identify both.

Read Voltage fade alongside Capacity fade in this context. The loss of charge a cell can store and deliver, for example through lithium locked into the SEI or active material that has cracked out of service.
