Salt spray test

Exposing a pack enclosure, connector or fastener to a fine mist of 5 % sodium chloride solution at 35 °C for hours to weeks to rate its corrosion resistance. Vehicle packs sit under the floor in road salt, so corroded seals and high-voltage connectors are a real failure path; ISO 9227 defines the neutral test.

Also called
salt fog test, neutral salt spray, ISO 9227

Example

Testing methods: an example situation

Resistance immediately after a current step can differ from a ten-second value because slower polarization contributes.

Read Salt spray test alongside Damp heat test in this context. Keeping a cell, module or pack warm and very humid, steadily or in cycles, to bring out corrosion, seal leaks and condensation that lower insulation resistance. The common cyclic version, IEC 60068-2-30, alternates between about 25 °C and 40 or 55 °C at over 90 % relative humidity in 24-hour cycles for several days.
