Porous-electrode theory
The framework, due to Newman and co-workers, that treats a porous electrode as two overlapping continua — solid and electrolyte — exchanging current everywhere through their shared surface. It underlies every physics-based lithium-ion model. [1]
Example
Porosity reduces effective transport
At 40% porosity, D_eff is 25.298% of bulk diffusivity.
An empirical pore-structure assumption; actual tortuosity must be characterized.

A Bruggeman relation approximates transport through a porous medium.
At 40% porosity, D_eff is 25.298% of bulk diffusivity.
D_eff = D εᵇ
Illustrative model. An empirical pore-structure assumption; actual tortuosity must be characterized.
