Data logger

A device on the vehicle or bench that records bus traffic and sensor data to BLF or MDF4 files, often with triggers and remote upload. For field failures it is the black box from which the sequence of events is rebuilt.

Depot charging

Charging a fleet of buses or trucks at the depot, usually overnight at 50–150 kW per vehicle, which keeps cell stress low and lets an energy-management system sequence the chargers against the site’s grid connection.

Electric bus

A battery-electric city or coach bus, with packs of 300–700 kWh on the roof and at the rear, LFP or NMC, charged overnight in the depot or at the terminus by pantograph. Its duty cycle — long hours, deep daily cycles, a twelve-year life — makes battery aging the central engineering question.

FMS interface

The manufacturer-independent CAN data interface of trucks and buses, defined by the major European OEMs, that exposes vehicle data — including, for electric vehicles, battery state of charge, charging status and energy consumption — to fleet-management telematics.

State of health

A summary of how far a cell has aged, often expressed through remaining capacity or increased resistance compared with when it was new. By convention a cell has reached end of life at 80 % of its rated capacity.

VDV 301

The VDV recommendation on the IP-based on-board network of a bus, the basis of the European ITxPT architecture. It is how battery state, charging status and energy data from the vehicle reach the operator’s fleet systems in a standard form.
