A2L file

The ASAM description of a controller’s internal measurement and calibration variables — names, memory addresses, data types and conversions — that tools need to read or tune them over XCP. It is generated with each firmware build and must match it exactly.

BLF file

Vector’s compressed binary format for bus logs: every CAN, CAN FD, LIN or Ethernet frame with its timestamp and channel. It is the usual format of field logs from vehicles and test benches, decoded with the matching DBC file.

Data logger

A device on the vehicle or bench that records bus traffic and sensor data to BLF or MDF4 files, often with triggers and remote upload. For field failures it is the black box from which the sequence of events is rebuilt.

DBC file

The de-facto text format, from Vector, that describes a CAN network: which messages exist, their identifiers and timing, and how each signal is packed, scaled and named. Without the BMS’s DBC a CAN log is just numbers.

HDF5 and Parquet

General-purpose binary formats for large scientific and tabular data — hierarchical HDF5 and columnar Parquet — used to store battery test and fleet data at scale, where CSV becomes too slow and too large.

XCP

The ASAM protocol for reading internal variables of a running controller and changing its calibration parameters, over CAN, Ethernet or other buses; CCP is its CAN-only predecessor. Engineers use it to watch BMS state estimators in real time and tune thresholds.
