Battery knowledge · Charging and discharging

Equalization charge

A deliberate, controlled overcharge of a lead–acid battery that brings weaker cells up to full and stirs the electrolyte. It must never be applied to lithium-ion cells, which are equalised electronically by the BMS instead.

Example

Charging and discharging: an example situation

The same CC–CV law can operate overnight or during a short depot stop.

Read Equalization charge alongside Cell balancing in this context. Equalising the state of charge of cells in series, since the pack is limited by its emptiest cell on discharge and its fullest on charge. Passive balancing bleeds charge from high cells through resistors; active balancing moves it between cells.
