Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy
Mapping elements inside an electron microscope: the beam excites X-rays whose energies identify the elements present, giving composition maps alongside the image. It shows binder and conductive-carbon distribution, coatings and deposited transition metals, but lithium is effectively invisible to it.

Example
Materials analysis and post-mortem: an example situation
Surface and bulk measurements may find different compositions in the same electrode without contradiction.
Read Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy alongside Binder migration in this context. Binder carried to the top of the coating by evaporating solvent during fast drying, leaving the foil interface binder-poor. The result is weak adhesion and higher resistance; it is controlled by drying profile and slurry formulation.
