Superionic conductor
A solid in which one ion species moves almost as freely as in a liquid, reaching the order of 1 mS/cm or more, while the rest of the lattice stays rigid. α-silver iodide above 147 °C is the classic case; Li₁₀GeP₂S₁₂ reaches about 12 mS/cm at room temperature. Such materials are the basis of solid electrolytes.
- Also called
- fast-ion conductor, solid ionic conductor
Example
Electrolytes and separators: an example situation
Greater liquid uptake may improve wetting while changing mechanical behavior. Several properties define separator performance.
Read Superionic conductor alongside Ionic conductivity in this context. How readily an electrolyte carries ions, in siemens per centimetre. Liquid carbonate electrolytes reach about 10 mS/cm at room temperature; the best sulfide solid electrolytes match that, while polymers fall far short unless heated.
