Vehicle and transport standards: an example situation

Shipping tests and vehicle battery approval tests address different uses; passing one does not automatically satisfy another.

In the US, advisory circular AC 20-184A, reissued in 2026, gives an accepted way to show that installed rechargeable lithium batteries are safe, including thermal-runaway containment demonstrated with every cell in runaway. In Europe, EASA’s Special Condition SC E-19 sets requirements for electric and hybrid propulsion systems, including the propulsion battery and its management system.
