Aircraft battery certification

The approval route for batteries on aircraft. In the US, advisory circular AC 20-184A, reissued in 2026, gives an accepted way to show that installed rechargeable lithium batteries are safe, including thermal-runaway containment demonstrated with every cell in runaway. In Europe, EASA’s Special Condition SC E-19 sets requirements for electric and hybrid propulsion systems, including the propulsion battery and its management system.

Vehicle and transport standards: an example situation

Shipping tests and vehicle battery approval tests address different uses; passing one does not automatically satisfy another.

The electronics and software that keep a battery inside its safe window: measuring every cell voltage and many temperatures, estimating SOC and SOH, balancing cells, computing current limits, controlling the contactors and reporting over the vehicle network.
