Battery knowledge · Aging and degradation

Crosstalk

Degradation at one electrode caused by species produced at the other — dissolved transition metals or oxidation products from the positive electrode damaging the SEI on the negative. It is why electrode aging cannot be studied in isolation.

Example

Aging and degradation: an example situation

Capacity loss and resistance rise can have different causes; a film-growth curve cannot identify both.

Read Crosstalk alongside Electrolyte decomposition in this context. Reduction of the electrolyte at the negative electrode and oxidation at the positive, outside its stability window. A little is useful — it builds the SEI — but continued decomposition consumes lithium, dries the cell and makes gas.
