Comma coater

A knife-over-roll coater whose blade is a roll ground to a comma-shaped edge, set at a precise gap above a backing roll that carries the foil. It tolerates a wide range of slurry viscosity and is common on test and pilot lines, while high-volume electrode lines mostly use slot dies for faster, more uniform coating.

comma bar coater, knife-over-roll coater

Example

Manufacturing: an example situation

An electrode can meet coating mass targets but fail adhesion or moisture checks later.

Read Comma coater alongside Coating in this context. Applying slurry to the moving foil at a controlled wet thickness, usually with a slot die, often on both sides. Coating weight per area must be held within about one percent across the web, because every downstream property depends on it.
