ATEX and IECEx

The two certification routes for equipment used in explosive atmospheres. ATEX is EU law, Directive 2014/34/EU, mandatory across the European Economic Area; IECEx is the IEC’s voluntary international scheme. Both test to the IEC 60079 series and share the Ex marking, and a battery-powered device is certified together with its specific battery.

Example

Stationary, industrial and product standards: an example situation

A cell-level test does not establish fire performance or commissioning requirements for a complete installation.

Read ATEX and IECEx alongside Conformity assessment and CE marking in this context. The procedure by which a manufacturer shows a battery meets the EU Battery Regulation — safety, performance, durability and labelling — before affixing the CE mark. For EV and industrial batteries a notified body is involved; the Regulation replaces the Low Voltage Directive route the old rules used.
