Compression pad

A foam sheet between pouch or prismatic cells that keeps a defined pressure on them as they breathe on charge and swell with age. It also provides some thermal separation between neighbours.

Solid electrolyte

A solid ion conductor that replaces the liquid electrolyte in an all-solid-state cell. Oxide, sulfide, halide and polymer families each need a different production route.

Solid-state battery

A cell whose electrolyte is a solid rather than a liquid. It removes the flammable solvent and may allow a lithium-metal anode, but needs intimate solid–solid contact and, for most chemistries, stack pressure to keep it.

Swelling

Growth in a cell’s thickness, reversibly as the electrodes expand on charge and irreversibly as gas and SEI accumulate. Packs allow for it with compression pads, and a sudden swell in service is a warning sign.
