Smart Battery System
A set of open specifications from the mid-1990s, begun by Duracell and Intel, under which a battery reports its own state over SMBus to the host and to a smart charger. The Smart Battery Data specification fixes the registers — voltage, current, remaining capacity, cycle count, requested charge current — so any compliant charger serves any compliant pack.

Example
Modules, packs and battery management: an example situation
Twelve 3.6 V, 5 Ah cells in 6s2p give 21.6 V, 10 Ah and 216 Wh nominally before other restrictions.
Read Smart Battery System alongside Charger in this context. The power electronics that convert mains or DC supply into the controlled current and voltage a battery needs. For lithium-ion it runs the CC-CV profile within the limits the BMS communicates, and stops rather than floats when the cell is full.
