Short circuit

A connection of negligible resistance between two points that should be separated, so current is limited only by the source. For a battery it may be external, across the terminals, or internal, between the electrodes inside the cell.

Example

Units and electrical basics: an example situation

10 A for 30 min transfers 5 Ah. At constant 3.6 V this is 18 Wh; varying voltage requires integration.

Read Short circuit alongside External short circuit in this context. A low-resistance connection between the terminals outside the cell, driving currents of hundreds of amperes. Fuses, the current interrupt device and a positive-temperature-coefficient element are the layers of protection against it.
