Instrumented cell

A cell built or modified with sensors inside — thermocouples in the jelly roll, optical fibres with Bragg gratings for temperature and strain, reference electrodes, pressure sensors — to measure what surface sensors miss. At high current the core can run several degrees hotter than the can, which only such cells show directly.

sensorised cell, embedded sensors, fibre Bragg grating, FBG

Example

Testing methods: an example situation

Resistance immediately after a current step can differ from a ten-second value because slower polarization contributes.

Read Instrumented cell alongside Jelly roll in this context. Electrodes and separators wound together into a spiral. It is the inside of a cylindrical cell and of many prismatic cells; large pouch cells usually use stacked sheets instead.
