Delamination
Separation of the electrode coating from its current collector, or of layers within a cell, which cuts the electronic path to part of the electrode. It is caused by poor adhesion, binder degradation, gas pockets or repeated swelling.
Example
Aging and degradation: an example situation
Capacity loss and resistance rise can have different causes; a film-growth curve cannot identify both.
Read Delamination alongside Binder degradation in this context. Loss of the binder’s ability to hold particles to each other and to the foil, from swelling in electrolyte, repeated strain or heat. Particles that lose contact stop storing lithium, and the coating can delaminate from the foil.
