Battery authentication

A check by which a host or charger confirms that a battery is genuine before using or charging it: a secure chip in the pack answers a random challenge with a response computed from a secret key, typically with SHA-256 or elliptic-curve cryptography. It keeps clones, with weaker cells and protection, out of phones, tools and medical devices.

authentication IC, counterfeit battery detection, secure battery ID

Example

Modules, packs and battery management: an example situation

Twelve 3.6 V, 5 Ah cells in 6s2p give 21.6 V, 10 Ah and 216 Wh nominally before other restrictions.

Read Battery authentication alongside Fuel gauge in this context. The single chip in a phone, laptop or power tool that does the BMS’s state-estimation job for one or a few cells: coulomb counting corrected by an OCV model, with impedance tracking in better parts. It reports remaining capacity over SMBus or I²C.
