Area-specific resistance
A cell’s or layer’s resistance multiplied by its electrode area, which makes resistance comparable between cells of any size. A 100 Ah cell with 2.5 m² of electrode area and 1 mΩ of resistance has an ASR of 25 Ω·cm²; cell designers and solid-state interface researchers both work in it.
- Abbreviation
- ASR
- Also called
- area-specific impedance, ASI
- Unit
- Ω·cm²
- Relationship
- ASR = R · A
Example
Normalize by active area
An illustrative measured resistance of 0.2 Ω across 5 cm² corresponds to 1 Ω·cm². Use the same geometrical-area convention when comparing samples.
Explore the graph
Normalize resistance by the area through which current passes.
At 2500 cm², 10 Ω·cm² gives 4 mΩ.
ASR = R × A; R = ASR/A
Illustrative model. Uniform current density and a fixed area-specific resistance are assumed. Define whether area is geometric, coated or active before comparing data.
