Ionic liquid electrolyte

An electrolyte based on a salt that is liquid at room temperature, with negligible vapour pressure and so no flammability. High viscosity, cost and poor graphite compatibility have confined it to niche cells. [1]

Example

Electrolytes and separators: an example situation

Greater liquid uptake may improve wetting while changing mechanical behavior. Several properties define separator performance.

Read Ionic liquid electrolyte alongside Electrolyte in this context. The ion-conducting medium between the electrodes. In a liquid-electrolyte cell it fills the pores of both electrodes and the separator, so it is not a separate structural layer.
