Fault tree analysis

A top-down safety analysis that starts from one undesired event, such as thermal runaway reaching the cabin, and breaks it into the combinations of failures that could cause it, linked by AND and OR gates. With failure rates attached it yields a probability; it complements the bottom-up FMEA and is standardised in IEC 61025.

Example

Safety and abuse: an example situation

A low normal-load temperature does not demonstrate thermal-runaway containment.

Read Fault tree analysis alongside Failure mode and effects analysis in this context. A structured review that lists every way a component or process could fail, its effect, and how likely it is to happen and be detected, scoring each to prioritise fixes. Battery programmes run it on the cell, the pack design and the production process.
